什么是 “in lieu of flowers donations”？

最近有个同事的父亲去世了，老板给我们发了个邮件说是他的家人request "in lieu of lowers donations" 还给了邮寄的具体地址。这个是什么意思呢？是不是希望把买花的钱省下来寄给他们家呢？一般多少钱合适？

in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to .....

Write a check, mail it to that organization, and include the family's name and address, so that the charitable organization can notify the family about the donation. You do not need to tell the family yourself. The charitable organization normally will not tell the family how much you donated, just that you made a donation.
