Daniel McCarthy, former head of children’s programming at CBC, helped create the memorable characters that populated the morning airwaves in the 1960s and ’70s. Almost every Canadian who grew up in that era knows a “tickle trunk” contains costumes and whistling is the way to summon Jerome the giraffe. McCarthy was a radio and television producer for 33 years, including 12 years as head of children’s programming. He died Jan. 10 at the age of 86 in Arnprior.
