TOKYO ― Sony Corp. is voluntarily recalling about 18,000 Vaio notebook computers to fix possible problems caused by improperly mounted internal modems.

Sony said the modems could cause one of two problems. When the notebook computers are powered by AC adaptors, noise from the AC adaptor significanly slows down modem operation. The internal modems can also short circuit when the modem receives a call. This could possibly give users an electric shock if they are touching the computer's metal exterior terminals.

Sony uncovered the modem problem in pre-shipment review at its San Diego factory in mid June. Testing by company engineers found that the improper mounting. Engineers also determined that an electric jolt as high as 75 V was possible.

The improper assembly occurred during an unspecified period at Sony's subcontracting assembly factory in China. The China factory also conducted the pre-shipment test, only during battery-powered operation. Hence, testers there failed to find the problem, according to a Sony spokeswoman.

Thus far, Sony said has received several complaints about slow operation, but no injuries have been reported.

The notebook computers subject to recall are among the A4-sized notebook PCs marketed since May 2003. A total of 13,000 units were sold in Japan as a part of Vaio FR series, with 3,000 units shipped to the United States as a part of PCG-FRV25 and PCG-F RV27. About 2,000 units were shipped in Europe.

Sony is notifying U.S. and European Vaio owners directly. It has created a Web site in Japan so users of the Japanese model users can determine whether their machines is covered by the recall.
