Baby born in jail cell dies

A one-year-old boy who was born on the floor of an Ottawa jail cell last September died in hospital Sunday after suffering from respiratory problems since birth. Julie Bilotta was in custody at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre when she gave birth to her son, Gionni Lee Garlow, on Sept. 29, 2012. Bilotta, who was eight months pregnant at the time, alleges she tried to convince jail staff that she was in labour, but was was forced to give birth in her cell after nursing staff ignored her pleas for help.
