Ottawa - For the third consecutive year, the City of Ottawa has been named as one of the Top 100 Employers in Canada based on a rigorous annual survey conducted for The Globe and Mail newspaper.

“It is a great honour to be named a top employer once, but three consecutive years – a hat trick - is a tribute to the commitment and service of City employees year in and year out,” said Mayor Jim Watson. “The City of Ottawa is committed to offering its employees a positive, productive and engaged workplace and we are very pleased to be recognized again for that commitment.”

Every year since the national competition’s inception in 2001, the Canada's Top 100 Employers project determines which employers lead their industries in offering exceptional workplaces for their employees. Editors examined the recruitment histories of more than 75,000 employers across Canada.

Employers are evaluated on each of the following:

  • physical workplace
  • work atmosphere and social
  • health, financial and family benefits
  • vacation and time off
  • employee communications
  • performance management
  • training and skills development
  • community involvement

Employers were compared to other organizations in their field to determine which offers the most progressive and forward-thinking programs. Each employer on the list is considered an industry leader in terms of attracting and retaining quality employees.

“To be recognized as a great place to work is a result of a dedicated team of staff that are focused on enhancing the client experience,” said City Manager Kent Kirkpatrick. “We offer tools and supports to enable employees to develop and contribute to their fullest potential. This award recognizes the exceptional, hard-working employees who serve the residents of Ottawa every day.”

In selecting the City of Ottawa, judges noted efforts to help employees achieve work-life balance through a variety of alternative work arrangements including flexible hours, telecommuting and shortened and compressed work week options. They also recognized the City for being an avid supporter of ongoing employee education and for offering a range of in-house and online training programs.
