Confirmed Audi SQ7 Test Mule Spied at Nurburgring
by George Achorn on 23 April 2015 in Rumors, Renders & Spy Photos

With the new Q7 revealed in January, Audi plans an expansion of the model line that will dial up the performance quotient. Dr. Hackenberg even mentioned the car recently to press, though these latest spy photos confirm the model live and in person.

Outwardly, the lower stance and quad exhaust tips are likely production spec. It remains to be seen whether the gloss-black mesh wheels are SQ7 kit, though we’ve not seen them before on other Audi models. Like most S-models, it’s not surprising to see the Q7’s already-seen S line bumper design though with opened lower fascial elements around the foglights for improved breathing that’s likely necessary for a more aggressive engine. We expect to see an S-car specific grille and brightwork on a production model as well.

Even with all of the exterior changes, it’s what is found on the inside that truly confirms this mule as an SQ7. Like an A1 S line we spied years ago in the Audi Forum Ingolstadt, the tell that this is an SQ7 comes from the new model nomenclature badging on the instrument cluster. Lucky our spy photographer sources nabbed a few interior shots. A sharp eye will also note an uprated interior with more sporting seats.

So what powertrain will the car have. Hackenberg mentioned an SQ7 TDI, which would follow in the lead already set by the SQ5 TDI. Rumors have suggested it’ll use the 3.0 TDI, perhaps with electric turbo. If the USA gets the SQ7, then perhaps we’ll also see a 4.0 TFSI, following the example set by the SQ5 which offers a petrol version for the USA and China but retains TDI only for Europe.

Check out more photos of the SQ7 test mule in our photo gallery linked in the usual spots below and also to the right of this story.

Report: Electric Audi Q6 Arriving by 2018 With 310 Miles of Range
By Kelly Pleskot | April 22, 2015 |

11 New stories published within the last 24 hours

Audi confirmed last month that it will produce an electric crossover, and now we have a few more clues on what to expect for the car that will likely be called the Q6. Speaking with Auto Express, Audi CEO Rupert Stadler said the model will be available by 2018 to coincide with the arrival of a stronger charging infrastructure.
More on Motortrend.com:

Stadler said that achieving a range of 500 km, or 310 miles, "is a must." “Now with our engineers and our battery-cell suppliers we are at a stage where we can say, yes, this is feasible and we believe that with the ongoing investments in terms of infrastructure development we think that 2018-2019 is the right time to come up with such a car," he noted. Good news for the Q6 and other EVs: China is expected to rapidly expand the charging network along its highways and Europe just may follow suit, Stadler says. The Audi boss promises the Q6 will be "sexy," "sporty," and "packed with utility." The Audi Q6 is poised to take on the Tesla Model X, which could arrive a lot sooner. On its website, Tesla estimates that customers who reserve a model now will have it delivered by early 2016.

The Q6 isn't the only new crossover coming to the Audi lineup. As we reported last month, Audi has also confirmed a Q8 model, which will be offered as a sporty Q variant. According to Stadler, it will be more expensive than the new Q7.

Lamborghini SUV Confirmed with Sant Agata Production Investment Announcement
by Audi AG on 27 May 2015 in Lamborghini News

Automobili Lamborghini announces a luxury SUV as a third model to join its product range. The market introduction of the series model is planned for 2018. A concept of the car was first presented as the Lamborghini Urus in 2012 at the Beijing auto show.

The new vehicle will be produced in Sant’Agata Bolognese and will herald additional growth and significant opportunities across the marque with the expansion of the product range. It will also determine a substantial increase in the production capacity of the factory. Over the lifecycle of the new vehicle the company will invest hundreds of millions of Euros.

The project will be realized due to the joint commitment of several parties involved, including Volkswagen Group with AUDI AG as Lamborghini shareholder, the Italian Ministry of Economic Development, Invitalia (Italian national agency for inward investments and economic development), Emilia Romagna Region, the Union Representatives and the entire Automobili Lamborghini team.

Automobili Lamborghini President and CEO Stephan Winkelmann declares: “This is a proud moment for everybody in Lamborghini. The introduction of a third model line endorses the stable and sustainable growth of the company and signifies for us the beginning of a new era.”

He adds: “The new SUV will be made in Sant’Agata Bolognese, demonstrating our commitment to safeguarding the values of ‘Made in Italy’ worldwide.”

Production of the new Lamborghini SUV in Sant’Agata Bolognese will see significant development of the factory site, increasing from the current 80,000 square meters to an area covering ca. 150,000 square meters. The project will include the construction of new facilities, such as a new production line, warehousing and enlargement of the R&D department. The addition of a third model line will also provide important opportunities for the supplier network in Italy and internationally, and have a strong impact on human resources: Lamborghini intends to hire 500 new employees.

Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management Audi AG states: “Lamborghini, Italdesign Giugiaro and Ducati have developed very successfully under Audi parentage, and kept their Italian identity. With the decision to produce the Lamborghini SUV in Sant’ Agata Bolognese we have proven once more our commitment to Italy as an important automotive industrial nation.”

Luca de Meo, Board Member for Sales and Marketing Audi AG underlines: “Lamborghini is today one of the world’s most exclusive brands. We at Audi are very proud of all our Italian subsidiaries. I am delighted at this outcome for both Lamborghini and Italy, and thank the Italian government for their collaboration in helping to make this possible.”

A luxury SUV sees Lamborghini challenging an unexploited, fast-growing and fascinating car segment, and expanding its clientele significantly. These will include Lamborghini super sports car customers who to date have driven SUV models from other brands, as well as families and customers new to the Lamborghini marque. Distribution of volumes will be well balanced among the three major sales regions: EMEA, the Americas and Asia Pacific. Target markets will be primarily the USA, China, the Middle East, United Kingdom, Germany and Russia. The annual volumes will be around 3,000 vehicles and will double the company’s current sales performance.

Audi Confirms Q1, Q6 and Q8 plus Timeframes at Annual General Meeting
by George Achorn on 27 May 2015 in Rumors, Renders & Spy Photos

We’ll pardon you for not reading every paragraph of recent speeches by Audi board members at the Annual General Meeting. We slipped them out in our news feed late last night and often such talk is heavy on finance speak with the occasional smattering of product news. Well, consider yourself smattered, because Audi chief Rupert Stadler shared a few tasty morsels regarding new models coming down the line.

Here’s a rundown.

Audi Q1
Audi’s entry-level Q-model crossover set to be called the Q1 will arrive in 2016.

Audi Q6Believed to be called Q6, this all-electric model is described as “a sporty SUV with a very emotive design and a range of more than 500 kilometers.” It arrives by 2018.

Audi Q8It is said that this new flagship Q-model brought American dealers to their feet for a standing ovation during a product preview in Ingolstadt several months ago. Stadler mentioned this new model without itemizing a timeframe.

Audi’s Head of IT Wins European Award
by Audi AG on 5 June 2015 in Audi News
Audi is driving in the digital fast lane. The European business network CIONET has chosen Mattias Ulbrich, Head of IT and Organization at AUDI AG, as the “European Chief Information Officer of the Year.” This Thursday, the 48-year-old received the award during the CIO CITY conference in Brussels in front of 170 IT executives from international companies.
The European business network CIONET comprises more than 5,100 IT executives from 18 countries and promotes dialog between IT specialists of various disciplines. The award “European CIO of the Year” has been given annually since 2011 in recognition of European IT visionaries from large corporations, small and medium‑sized enterprises and the public sector. The 12‑member jury is composed of IT experts from the fields of business, science and politics, and primarily assesses the contribution made by IT to a company’s increased competitiveness. With their innovative IT strategy, Mattias Ulbrich and his team succeeded against finalists from six countries.
“In the digital era, interdisciplinary collaboration is the key to success. The best ideas for the active shaping of rapid transformation are created in a team,” stated Ulbrich. By means of intelligent IT solutions, he says that Audi has improved the processes of production, logistics and quality assurance for example, and has thus increased productivity while reducing costs. On the subjects of Audi connect, the connection of cars with their environment, and Audi City, the digital showroom of the future, the Audi IT team cooperates very closely with colleagues from the Technical Development and Sales divisions.
“What most impressed us was how successfully Mattias Ulbrich and his team have cooperated with all departments to convert the groundbreaking potential of digital technologies into a competitive advantage,” explained Dr. Nils Fonstad, jury member and scientist at the Sloan Center for Information Systems Research of the MIT. For example, Ulbrich and his staff successfully strengthened the brand’s digital image, improved its customers’ experience and created new revenue sources.
“IT specialists play a key role in the digital transformation of our society,” emphasized Indrajit Banerjee, Director of the Knowledge Society Division of UNESCO, in his speech at the award ceremony.
Audi’s IT department employs more than 1,000 people and supports well over 1,500 individual departments within AUDI AG. It also supports the 100‑percent subsidiaries of the Audi Group, Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. and Ducati Motor S.p.A., with key IT issues. The same applies to over 20 other subsidiaries in Germany and abroad as well as the worldwide sales companies.
The company is regarded as an attractive employer for IT specialists and will this year recruit numerous experts, in the area of Audi connect for example. In a recent survey of university graduates carried out by Universum, the brand with the Four Rings took fourth place as the best automobile manufacturer, directly after Google, Microsoft and Apple.

WEC Le Mans qualifying: Audi Sport quotes
by Audi Sport on 12 June 2015 in Motorsport
Ingolstadt, GERMANY/Le Mans, FRANCE– Audi is ready for one of the greatest challenges in motorsport: the Le Mans 24 Hours. Before the race on Saturday (start at 15.00, CEST), drivers and officials are confident. Quotes after qualifying.

Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich (Head of Audi Motorsport):
“I’m pleased with the work done by the entire squad. We went through everything that was possible in the time that was available to us. However, there were many interruptions during the three qualifying sessions. That interfered a little with our programs. Still, Audi has prepared well for the Le Mans 24 Hours. There are many strong rivals and teams in contention for victory. The crowd can look forward to seeing a classic in the 83rd running of the race.”

Chris Reinke (Head of LMP at Audi Sport): “I’d say our preparation for the race has been optimal. We used the driving time to gather as much data as possible. At the same time, our drivers did a perfect job and returned to the pits without the slightest body contact. The way the cars themselves ran technically was absolutely perfect as well. As always, we didn’t participate in the time chase because consistency is simply more important at Le Mans than a single fast lap is. Looking at the relative strengths, I’m sure that the first two thrilling WEC rounds at Silverstone and Spa provided a good taste of what the fans can expect here for 24 hours, starting on Saturday afternoon.”

Ralf Jüttner (Team Director Audi Sport Team Joest): “We did a lot of driving, our race drivers were able to adjust well to the cars and technically everything went smoothly. Obviously, this paid off because all our drivers achieved good lap times. Congratulations to Porsche on clinching the best grid positions. But for the race I’m optimistic as far as our pace is concerned because other factors come into play across the distance. I’m proud of the performances of our squad. The race cars become more technically complex every year. From Wednesday to Thursday we prepared all three Audi R18 e-tron quattro cars from scratch again for the race as planned. That’s an outstanding achievement in such a short time.”

Marcel Fässler (Audi R18 e-tron quattro #7): “We used the time in qualifying to set up our Audi R18 e-tron quattro for dry track conditions. We also paid attention to giving each driver the same amount of driving time as far as possible. André (Lotterer), Ben (Tréluyer) and I agree that our car is good to drive. So, we were never out to set a single fast lap time in any of the sessions. Plus, we could have hardly beaten the competition either. Instead, our race car is outstanding across the distance. This strategy will be crucial in this race. And the weather will play a role as well. We’re in for a very thrilling race. I’ve got a good feeling.”

André Lotterer (Audi R18 e-tron quattro #7): “On the test day two weeks ago, we didn’t find a rhythm because the weather put a spoke in our wheels. That’s why I’m happy that the qualifying sessions during the race week developed well for us, even though there were some interruptions. We continually improved our car. The R18 e-tron quattro feels good and gives us the self-confidence you need for 24 hours.

Benoît Tréluyer (Audi R18 e-tron quattro #7): “It’s been an exciting week up to now at Le Mans: scrutineering on Sunday, the traditional unveiling of the fingerprints on Monday, a lot of media commitments and then, obviously, the concentrated work with the squad on setting up our car. This build-up of suspense is exactly what makes Le Mans so unique. We feel comfortable in our car – that’s the best news you can have before a 24-hour race. We’re getting more and more excited about the start coming up.”

Lucas di Grassi (Audi R18 e-tron quattro #8): “We’ve come a long way in preparing now. During the pre-tests, in free practice on Wednesday and in the qualifying sessions, we had to work through our program in all kinds of conditions – we’re done with that now. We covered a total of 124 laps, which is nearly 1,700 kilometers. Grid position four is a good result on the one hand but on the other it doesn’t mean a lot. Besides speed, it’s efficiency and reliability that count here at Le Mans more than anything else – and those are exactly the strengths of Audi.”

Loïc Duval (Audi R18 e-tron quattro #8): “It does feel a bit strange to celebrate your own birthday in the pits at midnight. Although the pole position wasn’t one of the gifts, there was something that was even a lot more important: our three cars didn’t get a single scratch in the qualifying sessions and all the drivers feel comfortable in the cockpit. Obviously, we’ll continue to prepare up to the start of the race but the base for the race is excellent already. Of course we lost a lot of time due to the interruptions – but that’s the same for everyone in the field.”

Oliver Jarvis (Audi R18 e-tron quattro #8): “It’s been a very good week for us. The conditions weren’t always easy, but we kept our cool and stayed focused on reeling off our program. Qualifying is over now, so now we’re seriously in business at Le Mans – you can literally feel this tension in the pit lane. The spectators already got to see a thrilling qualifying in which Porsche were strong, as expected. Now, we’re going to leave no stone unturned to deliver an even more thrilling race to our fans.”

Filipe Albuquerque (Audi R18 e-tron quattro #9): “We optimally prepared for the toughest race of the year. The goal of our work was to make us feel comfortable in the cockpit on Saturday and Sunday. So, we worked out a set-up that all three drivers are equally happy with. Our starting base is not so crucial. It’s a lot more important to be competitive in the race. I already got along well with Marco (Bonanomi) last year. And our newcomer René (Rast) superbly fits with our squad. Audi has prepared us well for this race for more than half a year.”

Marco Bonanomi (Audi R18 e-tron quattro #9): “We had a lot on our plate for practice and qualifying, and finished our tasks. The whole team did a good job. And it helped that the rain that was forecast didn’t come. I’m expecting us to be in contention in the top group in the race. But it’s going to be a challenging weekend, because Porsche is a strong rival and we’re by no means underestimating our other competitors either. I believe we’ve got the chance of clinching a good result again this year at Le Mans.”

René Rast (Audi R18 e-tron quattro #9): “It’s always been a big dream of mine to race at Le Mans in the LMP1 class. Now, this dream has come true. I had goose bumps now and then sitting in the car and doing my first laps in the last couple of days. But at the next moment, I’m totally professional again and fully concentrated on my work in the cockpit. We knew it would be hard for us to beat Porsche in qualifying, so we focused on sorting all the things for the race.”
