What a friend we have in Jesus --- 耶穌恩友
作者史約瑟(Joseph Scriven 1819-1886)，生於愛爾蘭，父親是皇家海軍上校。早年他一心想當軍人，曾進軍官學校，但因健康欠佳而輟。1842年，他畢業于都柏林大學。史約瑟（Joseph Scriven）享有人人欽羨的財富、高等教育、敬虔的父母、快樂的人生。但有一天悲劇來臨了，就在結婚的前一晚，他的未婚妻溺死。這件意外讓史約瑟的人生轉了個大彎。
在極度悲傷中史約瑟找到了耶穌的安慰，他的生活也全然改觀。他離開愛爾蘭，搬到加拿大的希望港，將畢生精力投入做困苦者的朋友──他將衣服和財物送給有需要的人，並服務貧苦無助的人，而不拿任何報酬。不久史約瑟被當地人尊稱為「希望港的好撒瑪利亞人」。

這首詩的作曲者是孔文士（Charles C. Converse 1832-1918）。他是美國人，早年赴歐就讀，回美後專攻法律，但對音樂與哲學有更廣泛的興趣。他作有許多樂曲，但最膾炙人口的，卻是1870年作的這首簡單的聖曲。
