Ottawa –Ottawa’s new Innovation Centre will have the knowledge and expertise of an additional six professionals once it launches in the newly renovated Municipal Works Building #4 at Bayview Yards. The Centre, a non-profit corporation operating at arm’s-length from the municipality, will be overseen by a board of directors. The new directors, recently appointed through a public recruitment process, are:

  • Denise Amyot, President and CEO of the Association of Canadian Community Colleges, who is involved in applied research and linkages with industry.
  • Jim Roche, President and CEO of Stratford Managers Corporation, who was a founding member of Newbridge Networks Corporation, helping grow the company to over $1 billion in annual revenues.
  • Michael Runia, Managing Partner of Ontario Deloitte, who brings over 25 years of experience providing accounting, tax and business advice.
  • Brendan McGuinty, Principal of Strategies 360, with nearly two decades of entrepreneurial experience.
  • Philip Rimer, a partner at Dentons Canada LLP, who specializes in real estate project development.
  • Ian Fraser, an entrepreneur who is founder and co-owner of Hintonburg’s Cyclelogik.

“We’re excited to add such a strong set of skills to the Board of Directors,” said Mayor Jim Watson. “This is an important initiative of the City’s economic development plan, and this expertise will be critical to the success of entrepreneurs and new startup firms being nurtured through the Centre. Small business startups remain the backbone of economic growth and will continue to energize and diversify our vibrant local economy.”

The Innovation Centre is a partnership between the City of Ottawa, the Province of Ontario and the private sector. The province of Ontario has committed funding to refurbish the c.1941 Municipal Works building at Bayview Yards that will house the Centre.

“The Government of Ontario is proud to support the Innovation Centre with a $15-million investment,” said the Honourable Yasir Naqvi, Ontario’s Minister of Labour and MPP for Ottawa-Centre. “This project will rejuvenate the Bayview Yards, transforming it into a hub of creativity and collaboration that will help create the jobs of today and tomorrow.”

The City contribution is of equal value, and a business feasibility study has been provided to the City’s Finance and Economic Development Committee (FEDCO). That report will be available through ottawa.ca later today.

“The Centre will, without doubt, spur job growth in the City. It will create an economic environment favourable to both national and international investments,” said Steve West, chair of the Centre’s board of directors.

The new board members will join five existing directors who, aside from Mayor Watson and Steve West, include:

  • J. Douglas McLarty, Managing Director of McLarty & Co., a public accounting company in Westboro,
  • Nancy Meloshe, Principal of Meloshe & Associates, Ltd., a registered professional planner with experience in land development,
  • Jeff Westeinde, founding partner of the Windmill Development Group, an investor and entrepreneur in both the environmental and real estate sectors.
