See it yourself. The last answer is funny, and I like it. :)

sun roof vs. moon roof

Can anyone tell me the difference between a sun roof and a moon roof? Discussion has been heated at work on this subject and we can't find an answer. Our dictionaries have sun roof as a roof that can open, but no entries at all for moon roof.
Thanks for any help you can give!

Cammy

Generally, a moon roof is glass. Sun roofs (rooves?) are metal. Both will slide.

I don't know about the USA, but in Europe the term 'Pulling a moonie' means dropping one's pants to show off one's buttocks. Perhaps a 'moon roof' is one large enough to house one's botty in full view of the general public (and the cops - be careful). It is customary for one to pull a moonie if they are 8 balled in a game of pool.

The old definitions are: SUN = metal, MOON = glass
NEW defintions SUN = METAL and/or GLASS that OPEN while
the new MOON roof does NOT open (as in the new Maxima) it is just glass and you can look thru to see the "moon" :-)

Well, I will add a bit more confusion to the pot. I always thought that a SUN roof (which my Chrysler Sebring LXi has) either pops up at one end giving you a 3 or 4" opening to let in some air and/or it slides back on TOP of the roof about 20" or so to let in light and air. My son's Dodge Intrepid LE has a MOON roof, who's glass slides backwards (totally) INTO a space between the roof and the headliner. And let's not forget T-tops...... Cyndi

I didn't know there was a difference. I had imagined it was 'word play' to keep from being sued by another party who may have applied for a patent or copyright.

It depends on the time of day. If it is currently between sunrise and sunset, you have a "sunroof". If it is currently between sunset and sunrise, you have a "moonroof". Don't ask me what it is called during dusk and dawn!
But seriously, there is no strict definition. Both of them are holes in your roof with some kind of cover, and both of them cost too much and start leaking and making strange noises before you have finished making payments on whatever vehicle they are on.

The exact name for them is just a marketing game. The word "sunroof" is used on cars trying to project an image of a daytime activity. The word "moonroof" is used on cars trying to project an image of nighttime sophistication. They both refer to the same hole in the roof.

It's kind of like the difference between an "SUV" and an "AWD Station Wagon". They're the same thing. The only difference is the image being sold.
