I think I know a little about the business "Market America" and also a little about the "Chuan Xiao" in China. Some of my friends in China participated in Chuan Xiao and lost all of their investments. It was like this: one sold something to you at price X, you sold the same thing to a third person at price X+y, .... to the end, the price became crazy. All of a sudden, the first guy took all the money and disappearred. So I fully supported the policy of the government to ban such activities.
Market America (MA) is one of many companies doing the so-called network marketing business in US and Canada. There are strict rules and regulations about such business in both countries. Generally speaking, a business that has been in operation for many years should be legal. Otherwise, it should have been found out by governments already. I even read a document from the General Council (may not be the exact name) of the US (unfortunately I can't remember where I read it) which specified situations where activities may be illegal. From what I can remember, if a business doesn't sell products but makes money from membership fees of members, the business is most likely an illegal business.
Certainly something is legal doesn't necessarily mean it is definitely good. I also fully agree that friends should treat each other frankly and honestly. Of course, it is possible a person believes something is very good and wants to share with a friend. But you have the choice to say NO. I don't think anyone will force you to do anything here in this country. My friends encouraged me to go to Church I refused. My friends invited me to Casino I refused. However, we are still good friends. Friends don't have to be the same. On the contrary, friends should share ideas, point out what you think are wrong, and respect your differences. We came from a remote place. Friendship is more valuable than any other things. I know many people will disagree but this is my opinion.
What I said above is to say NO to something you don't agree with. On the other hand, we also should learn how to open our mind and have the courage to try something that is legal but you are not sure about. To look around, why don't we see as many successful, influential Chinese as others? Certainly we have a lot of difficulties. But we have to admit many of us don't have the courage to try something new. As far as I know, many people tried MA and left the business. I don't see that much a damage done. Perhaps this is also a good experience after all.
Here I'd like to say a few words to those friends who are still working on MA. Criticism from others may be helpful. As Chairman Mao said, correct those problems if you have, avoid those problems if you don't have.
Let's work together, help each other and build a unified, strong, loving Chinese community in Ottawa! Remember we are minority here and we need everyone of us to have a strong voice in this country.
