Ottawa – Mayor Jim Watson joined Councillor Mark Taylor, Chair of the City’s Community and Protective Services Committee, Somerset Ward Councillor Diane Holmes, and representatives of the local neighbourhood and community associations for the official reopening today of Chaudière Park and Primrose Park.
“The official reopening of these two parks is a momentous occasion, providing better facilities to meet the recreation needs of a changing community,” said Mayor Watson. “Both parks have undergone a complete rehabilitation and feature complementary new and upgraded amenities for the enjoyment of everyone in the neighbourhood.”
Key features of Chaudière Park include a new accessible wading pool and preschool play area, a renewed basketball court and shade shelter, green frontage expanded into the park, and new benches, picnic tables, bike racks and decorative fencing. The final budget for the redevelopment of Chaudière Park was just under $1 million.
“We worked closely with the community to provide quality amenities in both parks that are beneficial to the neighbourhood,” said Councillor Taylor. “Both parks were redesigned in tandem so that their attributes and amenities would complement each other.”
The redevelopment of Primrose Park includes a new splash pad and an accessible school-age play area in a “no-dogs” zone at the front of the park, renewal of the green space and the off-leash area for dogs in the balance of the park, and new pathways, lighting, landscaping and park furniture. The final budget for the redevelopment of Primrose Park was $1.23 million.
“The community has been very engaged in the redesign and rehabilitation of these parks, and I want to thank community members for all their work and assistance in developing plans that address the needs of the neighbourhood,” said Councillor Holmes. “I am very pleased with these incredible improvements - we have revitalized these great public spaces and in doing so, we are revitalizing this wonderful neighbourhood.”
