An Ottawa teen on a shopping trip to Syracuse with her family was killed Sunday in a crash on an upper New York State highway that also left other family members seriously injured.

Karine Rabay, 14, died when she was thrown from an SUV being driven by her father, Joseph Rabay. Her mother, Colette Rabay, 44, sister Joelle Rabay, nine, and grandmother, Salwa Rabay, were also injured. The father, 50, and grandmother, 77, were treated at Syracuse Hospital and released.

However, the mother and younger child were flown to Upstate University Hospital, also in Syracuse, where the mother remained in serious condition Monday night. Joelle Rabay’s condition was not released.

New York State Police investigators say Joseph Rabay was driving north on Interstate 81 near the town of Pamelia, in Jefferson County, shortly after 4 p.m. when he lost control of the 2010 Toyota Sequoia while negotiating a curve. Swerving from one lane to another, Rabay drove onto the west shoulder of the highway where he hit a guardrail. The SUV flipped over the guardrail and rolled down an embankment before landing upright in the median.

“He lost control of his vehicle for really no good apparent reason,” said senior investigator Michael Pastuf, with the New York State Police in Watertown. Traffic was fairly heavy but “there’s no alcohol, no drugs, no cellphone use, no speeding; none of those factors were involved.”

The father has told police that another driver suddenly pulled in front of him and had to brake abruptly. But Pastuf said Rabay is not sure what happened after that, whether he maybe hit the accelerator instead of the brake.

Both Karine and her mother were ejected from the SUV when it jumped the guardrail and rolled. The teenager was pronounced dead at the scene. The grandmother was a front-seat passenger.

“The scene would suggest neither of them were seat-belted,” Pastuf said.

As to why the accident happened, Pastuf could only say: “In our business, we see drugs, we see alcohol, we see cellphones, we see distracted drivers, we see excessive speed, we see something that answers that ‘why’ question. But this case none of those factors exist. It was really a tragic ending.”

Back in Ottawa, responses to the tragedy appeared on social media. “Lost one of my greatest and kindest friends,” one of Karine’s acquaintances posted on Twitter.

“R. I. P Karine Rabay,” posted another. “You will be missed.”
