The winning ticket in Friday’s $32-million Lotto Max lottery may have been validated at a downtown convenience store, but the name of the lucky winner — or winners — remains an mystery.
Shafqat Mahmood, manager of the Hasty Market convenience store at Metcalfe and Nepean streets, said two young men validated the winning ticket there Saturday around 4:30 p.m.
Mahmood, who wasn’t there at the time, relayed the story from the cashier working the weekend afternoon shift. “I was asking him if he was surprised and he said ‘Yeah I was a little confused,’” Mahmood said. “When they came, they knew that it was a winner. They told him, ‘When you validate it, it’s a big one.’”
After the store processed the winning ticket, sounds and lights were activated, and the provincial lottery corporation called to speak to the winners.
“They were saying it’s a big group,” Mahmood said. “(The employee) overheard them talking with OLG.”
He said it’s the first really big ticket that’s been sold or validated at the store that he knows of.
