Glengarry-Prescott-Russell has been held by Liberal Grant Crack since the most recent election in 2011, when the provincial newcomer won by a little more than three percentage points. Since then, the former North Glengarry mayor held parliamentary assistant roles to the Minister Responsible for Francophone Affairs, the Minister of Agriculture and Food and the Minister of Rural Affairs.

Before Crack was at Queen’s Park, Liberal Jean-Marc Lalonde held the riding for four terms without much opposition.

Crack’s rookie opponent is Conservative candidate Roxane Villeneuve Robertson, who previously managed a hospital foundation. She has name recognition because her father, Noble Villeneuve, was MPP in the region for five terms.

The electoral district — which stretches east from Navan and Russell to the Quebec border, mixing farmland with an industrial base — was created from parts of other ridings in 1996. It has a population of about 97,660, according to Elections Ontario.

The region was 58 per cent francophone, 36 per cent anglophone at the time of the 2011 census.

Villeneuve Robertson, executive assistant to MPP Lisa MacLeod, told the Citizen earlier in the campaign that the “No. 1 issue across the province right now is hydro rates. We have to make hydro more affordable to attract industry here.”

An informal survey during the campaign by the Glengarry News found hydro rates are also a major complaint among many voters.

Eliminating the Green Energy Act would bring down energy costs, she said, and reviving the agricultural colleges in Alfred and Kemptville are crucial in preserving jobs in farming.

Crack said he’s working on a longterm solution for the colleges, as well, and the Liberals have a broad range of support for industry in rural industries. He touted the riding receiving $7.2 million in infrastructure projects since his election.

Isabelle Sabourin is the NDP’s candidate and Raymond St. Martin is the Green Party’s candidate.

Take a look at our recent profile of the riding.
