The Ottawa police were called in to investigate after five people were injured when the car in which they were passengers slammed into an RCMP vehicle following a chase in downtown Ottawa on Sunday afternoon.
According to city police, there were six people, men and women, in the white Mazda 3 as it raced off the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway and onto Wellington Street at about 3:30 p.m. with an RCMP vehicle in pursuit.
The driver of the Mazda had allegedly failed to pull over when ordered to do so. He didn’t get far. It’s not clear how many RCMP vehicles were involved in the actual pursuit, but shortly after it began an RCMP SUV was able to get in front of the fleeing car and block it off. The car slammed into the SUV in front of the Supreme Court between Lyon and Kent streets.
Ottawa police quickly blocked off the area to traffic, closing access to Wellington at Lyon, Kent and Bank streets, while ambulances and a fire department rescue truck sped to the scene.
Five passengers in the Mazda were taken to hospital, four with minor injuries and one seriously. The driver, who was apparently unhurt, was handcuffed and placed in the back a police car. He was subsequently placed under arrest. Neither his name nor that of his passengers were released.
RCMP spokesmen could not be reached for comment on the situation.
