The finance committee has voted to renew leases and increase the rents for the main branch of the Ottawa Public Library.

The city and library board — which own the downtown branch — entered into a 60-year lease for the rights to the office tower above and parking garage below the library in 1973.

The fourth 10-year renewal term of the lease began recently. The current owner of the office tower, which is allowed through “air rights”, is Slate Properties Inc.

Slate will pay the city $286,000 in rent annually for the next decade for the tower, plus an additional $230,000 in rent annually for the parking garage.

Both amounts are increases but the staff report doesn’t say how much the previous agreements were for.
