The City of Ottawa reported more than 91 million litres of combined sewage and storm water overflowed into the city’s rivers after heavy rainfall Tuesday.

That brings the total to more than 571 million litres so far in 2014, already more than double last year’s 213 million litres reported between April and November.

Downpours on June 24 were responsible for the bulk of overflows, with 324 million litres of combined rain and wastewater flowing into local waterways.

It makes for dubious water quality at the city’s beaches.

All beaches except Britannia were under a no-swim advisory Wednesday after the 26 mm of rainfall. Westboro and Petrie River Beaches were still unsafe for swimming Thursday.

After the June 24 dump, water quality at all beaches was poor enough for a two-day red flag alert from Ottawa Public Health. Mooney’s Bay, Petrie Island and Petrie River beaches remained closed until June 28.
