Two 20-year-olds and three teenagers, all from Ottawa, have been arrested by Ontario Provincial Police in connection with a theft of copper wire at a Carleton Place construction site.

Jamie Burritt, 20, Stroud Fitzsimmons, 20, John Stewart, 18, and two 17-year-olds, one male and one female, face charges of theft over $5,000 and breaking and entering.

Police were advised shortly before 10 p.m. Wednesday that a theft was in progress at a construction site behind Notre Dame High School, on McKenzie Street in Carleton Place.

When police arrived, they found a grey Ford pick-up truck with copper wire piled into the back.

Police determined that five people had fled the scene. Three suspects were found in the area and arrested without incident. The other two were found with help from the OPP’s canine unit and emergency response team.

All five suspects were released on a promise to appear in court. Court dates for Burritt, Fitzsimmons and Stewart were scheduled for Aug. 25 in Perth.

The two 17-year-olds, whose names cannot be released, are to appear in a youth court in Smiths Falls, Aug. 20.
