Ottawa - Mayor Jim Watson hosted His Excellency Bruno van der Pluijm, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium, Jan Briers, Governor of the Province of East Flanders, Belgium, and other dignitaries for the official unveiling of the Treaty of Ghent Rose Garden at Ottawa City Hall. The ceremony marked the 200-year anniversary of the Treaty of Ghent, which was signed on December 24, 1814.

“This wonderful gift marks the anniversary of an important event in Canadian history, and it is a gift that will be enjoyed by many generations to come,” said Mayor Watson. “On behalf of my colleagues on City Council and all the people of Ottawa, I want to thank Ambassador van der Pluijm, Governor Briers, and the people of Belgium for this endearing gift.”

The Belgian Royal Society for Agriculture and Botany and the Embassy of the Kingdom of Belgium donated 144 bushes of the Treaty of Ghent Rose to the nation’s capital. The treaty, signed in the city of Ghent, was the peace treaty that ended the War of 1812 between the United States of America and the United Kingdom of Great Britain (Canada).

“Belgium and Canada share many common bonds,” said Ambassador van der Pluijm. “It is a great pleasure to mark this historic treaty and our close relationship with a unique and heartfelt gift to the people of Canada.”

The treaty restored relations between the two nations and the borders of the two countries to the line before the commencement of hostilities. The treaty was ratified by Parliament on December 30, 1814, and signed into law by the Prince Regent (the future King George IV), but hostilities continued because it took weeks for news of the peace treaty to reach the United States. An American army under Andrew Jackson won the Battle of New Orleans on January 8, 1815, and the Treaty of Ghent was not in effect until it was ratified by the U.S. Senate unanimously on February 18, 1815.
