Ottawa – Mayor Jim Watson and His Excellency Membathisi Mdladlana, South African High Commissioner, will officially commemorate the naming of Nelson Mandela Square with a plaque unveiling during a dedication ceremony on Thursday afternoon. Gwen Madiba, Mandela Legacy Ambassador: Canada and North America, will deliver remarks on behalf of the Mandela family.
Several dignitaries and special guests will be in attendance for the ceremony to recognize the area located in front of the City Hall Heritage Building and the site of the Human Rights Monument as Nelson Mandela Square.

Location: Front lawn of the Heritage Building (facing Elgin Street)

Ottawa City Council approved the naming of Nelson Mandela Square on April 9, 2014 following a proposal submitted earlier by Mayor Watson as a way to honour the late Nelson Mandela.
