An assault and robbery of two men on the Quebec side of the Ottawa River last Friday is being investigated as a potential hate crime by Gatineau police.
The attack occurred on a bike path in a wooded area behind the Université du Québec en Outaouais.
Sgt. Jean-Paul Lemay said he would not comment Tuesday on what details in the investigation led them to suspect that the attack could be a hate crime. He said the investigation is ongoing.
Officers were called to the scene around 12:30 p.m. on Friday. The two men, who are in their 40s, were attacked for their bike and their personal belongings, including a smartphone and an undetermined amount of money. One of them managed to escape while the other was thrown into the river.
One of the victims was able to provide a good description of the suspects, who were quickly spotted by police and arrested after a chase on foot. The two 21-year-old suspects face charges of robbery. They have been released on a promise to appear.
