Ottawa –Mayor Jim Watson and His Excellency Membathisi Mdladlana, High Commissioner of South Africa, today officially dedicated the outdoor area in front of the Ottawa City Hall’s Heritage Building, and home to the Human Rights Monument, as Nelson Mandela Square.

“It is with great admiration and respect that we pay tribute today to the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela through the commemoration of Nelson Mandela Square, in this spot near the International Human Rights Monument where Mr. Mandela stood during his 1998 visit to Canada,” said Mayor Watson. “Mr. Mandela was a great leader and humanitarian who devoted his life to the pursuit of democracy and equality.”

Nelson Mandela was an internationally recognized leader who, from the age of 26 until his death at age 95, dedicated his life to the peaceful termination of the South African apartheid regime, laying the foundation for a new democratic South Africa and the promotion of human rights and freedoms.

“I know Madiba not to be a narrow humanist but an all-round revolutionary steeped in the historical organisational objectives of the African National Congress,” stated His Excellency Mdladlana. “He was really committed to the struggle whose ultimate objective is to make better the lives of all our people, black and white.”

Gwen Madiba, Mandela Legacy Ambassador: Canada and North America, delivered remarks from the Mandela family. “On behalf of the Mandela Legacy and family, we would like to thank the City of Ottawa for this very special gesture. We hope that this will serve as a constant reminder of his legacy and his memory. We hope that it will inspire humanity to use their full potential to touch and change people's lives. We trust that the relationships he has built across borders will continue to flourish, inspire and uplift people all over the world.”

From 1964 to 1982, Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for plotting to overthrow the government by violence. During these years, his reputation grew steadily and he became widely accepted as the most significant black leader in South Africa and a potent symbol of resistance as the anti-apartheid movement gathered strength. He consistently refused to compromise his political position to obtain his freedom.

He served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999 and was South Africa’s first black chief executive, and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election. His government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid through tackling institutionalized racism, poverty and inequality, and fostering racial reconciliation.

In 1993, Nelson Mandela received the Nobel Peace Prize for his work toward the peaceful termination of the apartheid regime in South Africa and, in 2001 he became the first living person to be made an honorary Canadian citizen and the first foreign leader with membership in the Order of Canada
