Ottawa – Young people, aged 18 to 30, from 196 countries around the world will be coming to Ottawa in 2016 for the One Young World international youth conference.
Ottawa was announced as the winning city this morning by One Young World organizers from London, England, which was also livestreamed to a large contingent who were anxiously awaiting the results at the Ottawa Convention Centre. Ottawa was the only western city amongst four finalists, which included Hong Kong, Bangkok, and Kobe, Japan.
“We are extremely excited to have been chosen to host this prestigious international youth conference. It’s a substantial win for our city,” said Mayor Jim Watson who met with Ella Robertson and members of the selection committee when they visited Ottawa in June. “We are proud to join the One Young World family. Ottawa is vibrant and diverse city and we are ready to put on the best One Young World conference ever.”
This international event will see the 1,500 delegates coming to the Ottawa for the three-day conference. It will result in a $2 million impact to our local economy and will showcase Ottawa on the international stage.
“Ottawa is a perfect setting for this international youth conference,” says Councillor Mathieu Fleury. “The City of Ottawa has been committed to engaging young people to actively participate in their community and the world they live in – including the Youth Summit that was held at City Hall in 2013.”
“This is another success of our ‘Bid More, Win More, Host More’ strategy,” said Noel Buckley, CEO of Ottawa Tourism. “Ottawa Tourism, the Ottawa Convention Centre and our many partners made a strong team that effectively and professionally showcased our city. The One Young World organizers were extremely impressed.”
The “Bid More, Win More, Host More” strategy – a priority of the Economic Development and Innovation Department – was developed to attract national and world-class events. These events create growth and prosperity in the local economy. Over the last few years, the combination of bids won and events hosted resulted in more than $40 million for Ottawa’s economy.
