An Ottawa father has been charged after allegedly leaving his two young daughters in a hot vehicle in Vaughan, north of Toronto, early Tuesday evening.

The two girls, aged three and six, were in a car parked at a shopping lot near Highway 27 and Highway 7.

York Regional Police got the call at around 5:45 p.m. from a worried citizen.

“It was a significantly hot day yesterday so the person was very concerned and actually removed the children from a car and brought them into a fitness facility,” said Const. Laura Nicolle.

The 35-year-old man, who also has a home in Oakville, has been charged with leaving a child unattended under the provincial legislation known as the Child and Family Services Act.

Nicolle said not enough people are aware of the law.

“Under Child and Family Services Act, it doesn’t matter the circumstances or the amount of time, basically a child under 10 can’t be left unattended at all,” she said. “I don’t think very many people understand that.”

Police believe the two girls were left for about 30 minutes, but are still reviewing video surveillance of the parking lot for more information.

The father is expected to appear in provincial court in Richmond Hill on Sept. 5.
