Pembroke-area residents may have noticed the kitchen crockery rattle or the woodwork creak late Sunday morning during a weak earthquake.
Natural Resources Canada recorded a “weak” 2.7 magnitude earthquake in the area — 13 kilometres south southwest of Pembroke, to be precise — at 11:13 a.m. The agency subsequently received nearly 20 reports of residents having felt the equate, but there were no reports of damage.
The severity of an earthquake is generally proportional to the amount of seismic energy it releases. Generally speaking, quakes of less than 3.5 magnitude are barely noticed. Those between 3.5 and 5.4 are felt but rarely cause damage. Anything 7.0 magnitude or more can cause serious damage over large areas.
Historically, the most severe earthquake in the Pembroke area has been a 6.2 magnitude event in January 1935. Last year, on May 17, there was a 5.2 magnitude earthquake.
