A 53-year-old Gatineau man may be facing five charges after an alleged drunken threat involving a sawed-off shotgun caused a Monday night evacuation of nine homes.

Gatineau Police said a man called at around 8:30 p.m. saying a man had pointed a gun at him and made a death threat. Both were renting rooms in the same house, and knew each other.

By the time police arrived, the alleged victim was safely out of the home on Oxford Street, near the Gatineau River and the Pont des Draveurs bridge.

“When the first police officers arrived to that scene they didn’t take any chances,” said spokesman Pierre Lanthier, adding it took nearly two hours after they had secured the area, stationing officers at strategic spots to prevent a runaway and removing 20 people from neighbouring homes.

“We don’t see that very often,” said Lanthier of the unusual event.

Police used a megaphone to contact the man, who didn’t have a phone at the residence and was known to police.

“It’s old-school but it works,” he said of the loud audio technique.

He said the man, who was drunk, came out and didn’t resist arrest. Police found one weapon inside – a loaded sawed-off shotgun.

The man is in custody and although he has not been formally charged, he could face charges that relate to: threat of death involving a firearm, possession of a prohibited weapon, pointing a firearm at a person and possession of a firearm while under court order not to have a weapon.

The man has is expected to appear in court Tuesday.
