Five passenger trains on the busy Toronto-Montreal corridor were stopped and faced significant delays Wednesday due to an accident involving a freight train and another vehicle at a train crossing on Tate Road in Quinte West, Ont., near Belleville, according to Via rail.

One man, who has not yet been identified, was killed in the crash, according to the Ontario Provincial Police.

The accident is causing delays for the Ottawa-Toronto and Toronto-Montreal routes, but does not affect trains between Ottawa and Montreal.

Spokeswoman Mylène Bélanger said the five trains are stopped in Cobourg, Kingston and Belleville. Via is organizing alternate transportation for these passengers, she said.

“We have installed our contingency plan,” she said, adding passengers will likely be offered transportation on motor coaches.

She could not provide any information about how long the trains would be delayed.

Rebecca Rowe, who was travelling on a train from Toronto back to Ottawa Wednesday, said her train stopped at Cobourg around 11 a.m. Passengers were told that the delay was caused by a freight train accident and were let out of the train.

“We were wandering around the platform for a bit,” she said, until a Via official told passengers to get back on the train. Rowe said that passengers were told to expect up to a three-hour delay. They hadn’t yet been told about alternate transportation more than an hour after the train stopped.
