I generally agree that the new bridge be named after Lieutenant-General Sir Arthur Currie. I also share an earlier writer’s misgivings about commemorating the Canadian Corps attack on Vimy Ridge in April 1917 by the name Vimy Bridge. In my view, it is facile and leads too readily to a mistaken assumption that the battle was at some place called Vimy Bridge.

And speaking of mistaken assumptions, too many believe that the Canadian Corps was under the command of Currie in April 1917 when Vimy Ridge was captured by the Canadian Corps. It was not. The four divisions of the Corps (not three as stated in the letter) were under command of Lieutenant-General Sir Julian Byng. Arthur Currie at that time was in command of the First Canadian Division. He assumed command of the Canadian Corps later in June 1917.
