Ottawa – Mayor Jim Watson joined Councillor Mark Taylor at the Family Shelters Barbeque to distribute school supplies to more than 200 children living in Ottawa’s family shelters.

Each child received a backpack laden with school supplies and goodies, generously donated by Henry Schein Canada, a national supplier of dental, medical and veterinarian equipment. They also sponsored a fun filled day of activities for the children and their families.

“Education is the great equalizer in our society. It is our best hope for eliminating poverty and homelessness,” said Mayor Watson. “This is why this gift from Henry Schein Canada is so valuable. It will provide these children with the tools they need to fully participate in our school system and help them achieve their full potential.”

“Ottawa has made considerable progress in reducing chronic homelessness through our Ten Year Housing and Homelessness Plan,” noted Councillor Mark Taylor, Chair of Community and Protective Services. “However the sad reality is that there are approximately 32,000 children living in poverty in our city. We have approximately 200 youth living in emergency shelters and thousands more in community housing. Many other families are just a couple of paychecks away from being homeless.”

“The Back To School program focuses on giving vulnerable children the best possible start to the school year by providing the tools they need to succeed,” said Scott Kennedy, Branch Manager –Ottawa for Henry Schein Canada. “We consider these young people to be the future of our communities and our country. Our employees, Team Henry Schein, have helped raise money and prepare the backpacks for the children and we are extremely proud of what we have been able to achieve together.”

Residents and businesses can follow the lead of Henry Schein Canada and make donations of school supplies through the Caring and Sharing Exchange at the following Ottawa Public Library branches: Alta Vista, Carlingwood, Greenboro, Nepean Centrepointe, North Gloucester, Ruth E. Dickinson (at Walter Baker Centre in Barrhaven) and St. Laurent.
