A former Ottawa minor hockey and baseball coach was sentenced Monday to 8 1/2 years in prison for sexually assaulting 11 children between the 1970s and 1997.
Kelly Jones, 58, pleaded guilty to a series of predatory sexual offences, including two offences that were committed when he was 16. Jones admitted there are 15 other children he abused but he will not name them.
Kelly invited players to his home, where he typically showed them pornographic movies before luring them into sexual activity, court heard.
Crown prosecutor David Elhadad had asked for a sentence of 11 to 12 years’ imprisonment, while defence lawyer Jeffrey Langevin argued that four years was a more appropriate sentence.
The Crown argued in court that Jones used his influence as a coach to prey on his young victims.
Six of the victims told court in tearful statements that their lives have been devastated by the abuse. Some of the victims were left emotionally damaged, alcohol- and drug-dependent and with an inability to form permanent relationships, court heard.
Jones addressed the first victim to come forward.
“Thank you,” Jones said. “You’re very brave.”
