A 53-year-old alcoholic was sentenced to 12 months probation Wednesday for urinating on Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s office and yelling rude comments at soldiers on Canada’s National Day of Honour for the war in Afghanistan.

Albert Jenkins pleaded guilty to causing a disturbance on May 9 outside Langevin Block at 80 Wellington St.

Police were alerted to the man’s behaviour by a member of the public who was attending the ceremony to recognize Canada’s nearly 12-year mission in Afghanistan.

Jenkins was told to stop peeing on the office building when a police officer arrived, but he continued to do so.

Jenkins was drunk, unsteady on his feet and had urine on his pants when he was arrested, court heard.

Assistant Crown attorney Robert Thomson asked Ontario Court Justice Jack Nadelle for 45 days in jail since the incident happened on the National Day of Honour, there were many people around and that he was yelling rude comments at soldiers.

Nadelle sided with defence lawyer Martin Reesink that a jail sentence wouldn’t do Jenkins any good. Jenkins has enrolled in the John Howard Society of Ottawa’s substance abuse program.
