The suspect, believed to be in his 20s, approached a woman walking alone at around 10:30 p.m. in the area of Fairlop Way and Wanstead Drive.
He forcefully threw the woman, also in her 20s, to the ground, causing serious but non-life threatening injuries. The man, of medium build, may have injured a finger during the assault.
The woman got help from a pedestrian while the man ran away with her purse.
