Nearly 18 months after La Nouvelle Scene’s old building was torn down, construction has finally begun on a replacement for the theatre building.
Construction at the site on King Edward Avenue just north of Rideau Street started last week and the building’s on track to open in September 2015, executive director Suzanne Matte said Tuesday.
La Nouvelle Scene is a joint project of four francophone drama companies, founded in 1999. Its old building, featuring a 152-seat theatre, dated back to the 1930s and was plagued with ventilation and structural problems.
The provincial and federal governments first committed $2.7 million each in mid-2011 toward a new building. In March 2013, La Nouvelle Scene tore down its old building. Only afterward did the city add a $1-million contribution, along with waiving $450,000 in development charges.
Staff at La Nouvelle Scene made the announcement about construction at a news conference Tuesday at the Courtyard Restaurant in the ByWard Market.
