Environment Canada issued a tornado warning for the Upper Gatineau and Pontiac regions just after 8 p.m. Tuesday.

The warning covered areas surrounding Wakefield, Maniwaki, Gracefield, Papineau-Labelle, Fort William and Shawville.

Radar was indicating a rotation in a severe thunderstorm near Kazabazua that was headed northeast at 50 km/h toward Notre-Dame-du-Laus. Another thunderstorm was following the same track.

Large hailstones and heavy downpours were also expected as part of the two thunderstorms, Environment Canada said.

Petawawa, Pembroke and Renfrew were also under a severe thunderstorm warning issued just after 8:20 p.m.

If people see a tornado approaching, they should go indoors to a room on the lowest floor or in the basement, away from outside walls and windows.

People should leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers or other temporary or free-standing shelters and move to stronger buildings if possible. As a last resort people should lie down in a low spot and protect their heads from flying debris, the warning said.
