David Muzaliwa, an athletic 27-year-old man who loves to run and dance, remained in a coma Thursday, more than a week after he was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Bank Street and Heron Road.

Muzaliwa suffered life-threatening head injuries and a broken leg when he was struck around 1 p.m. on Aug. 20. He was unconscious when paramedics arrived.

Both his parents are at his hospital bedside round-the-clock, desperate to hear good news from doctors who have told them Muzaliwa’s recovery could take months or even a year.

“They can’t work,” said Jilleen Niles, the kitchen manager for Corner Bar and Grill in the Glebe, where Muzaliwa works as a line cook. “We’re going to try to help and support them any way we can.”

Niles said she has known Muzaliwa for a few years. They attended school together at St. Nicholas Adult High School, where Muzaliwa was on the running team. He participates in the Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend every year.

“He ran every day. Morning and night,” said Niles, adding he took the same route, day in, day out. It had become automatic.

David Muzaliwa remains in a coma more than a week after he was hit by a vehicle at the Bank Street and Heron Road intersection.

It was the car’s right of way when Muzaliwa started running across the Bank-Heron intersection, not noticing that a car was speeding towards him.

It happened in a heartbeat.

Muzaliwa remains in critical condition in The Ottawa Hospital’s Civic Campus intensive care unit. Though his condition is improving, it’s a slow process and his family has been told there could be complications, that he might not make a full recovery.

“He’s an awesome guy,” Niles said. “So fast, and one of my best cooks. He’s very talented, prompt and reliable. Always on time, always early.

“There’s so much I can say about this guy.”

While Muzaliwa’s family and friends pray for him to wake up, Niles said she is collecting donations for people who want to help the family while they maintain their vigil.

She has organized a fundraising dinner event at the restaurant Friday. Those interested in attending can find out more on the event’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/Donationsfordavid.
