The number of OC Transpo passenger rides keeps slipping, according to ridership statistics from the second quarter of this year.

The 22.94 million passenger trips during the three-month period is 1.4 per cent less than the year before, says a report going to the city’s transit commission next Wednesday. Since 2011, when there were 24.93 million rides during the second quarter, ridership has dropped each year.

“The main factor that contributed to the net decrease continues to be reductions to the number of people employed in the Ottawa-Gatineau region,” the report states, pointing to federal government downsizing. “Ridership is closely tied to employment levels, and any reductions in employment will have negative impacts on ridership.”

The new bus and O-Train ridership numbers are similar to those out earlier this year. In June, OC Transpo’s annual report outlined that trips were down 5.5 per cent from 2011 to 2013. Just in the first quarter of this year, ridership was down almost three per cent compared to the same time the year before.

One positive calculation, highlighted in the most recent report, is that annual ridership until the end of June is higher than annual ridership until the end of May. That’s the first increase of its kind in more than a year.

The report says those and other positive numbers “may be an indication that the economic decline experienced since the start of 2013 could be approaching an end.”
