A veteran Gatineau police officer who is facing six charges of illegally accessing police computers was involved in a fiery car crash in 2001 involving a police cruiser.

Court documents show Chantal Lacroix, 51, is accused of accessing police records for personal reasons.

Lacroix, who is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 11, allegedly accessed the computers six times between August 2013 and February of this year.

Lacroix, who joined the force 20 years ago, is charged with a section of the Criminal Code that usually pertains to hackers, and could face up to 10 years in jail. It is not known why, or how, Lacroix allegedly accessed the police database.

In 2001, Lacroix, and a colleague responded to calls for backup from fellow officers involved in a drug bust. Lacroix, who was driving, raced to their aid, but lost control of the cruiser and crashed into a hydro poll.

Lacroix and a colleague escaped from the car before it burst into flames. Both officers were treated for minor injuries.
