The jobless rate in the National Capital region hit 6.9 per cent in September, the highest level in more than four years.

The rate was up despite a gain of 2,800 jobs from August.

However, the labour force increased faster, with 3,900 new jobseekers, so the net number of unemployed was up 1,200.

Public admininstration jobs dropped 3,200 in September from August for a new total of 153,300. That is still up from 148,200 last September.

Drilling down to federal government jobs in the capital, there were 137,200 in September versus 139,400 in August. But September’s numbers were still up nearly 5,000 year over year.

Professional services were down in September as well in the NCR, losing 3,300 jobs for a new total of 70,000.

The big gainers in the sector were hotels and restaurants (up 6,100) and education.

More to come.
