Capital region’s jobless rate dropped to 5.5 per cent in December from 5.8 per cent in November.

It was the region’s lowest rate since April.

The regional economy added 3,300 jobs in December while labour force increased by just 1,500.

Statcan reported the number of federal government jobs in the capital fell by 5,600 in December vs November for new total of 128,900.

That’s the lowest since the summer of 2016.

But tech employment was up 900 to 48,100 jobs.

The biggest job gains in the capital region last month were in hotels and food services (up 5,200) and education services (up 4,000), easily enough to offset the sharp drop in federal government employment.

Nationally, the Canadian economy created 78,600 net new jobs in December as the unemployment rate fell to 5.7 per cent, the country’s lowest level since 1976.
