Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has been called in to investigate an incident in which both an OPP officer and a civilian were injured while police tried to arrest a suspect.

According the the SIU, officers with the Ontario Provincial Police Lanark County detachment responded early Tuesday to a reported assault at a residence on South Bush Road in Ompah, a small community about 100 kilometres northwest of Smiths Falls.

As officers attempted to make an arrest, the suspect fled on an all-terrain vehicle. Officers gave chase and eventually arrested a 52-year-old man, but in doing so both he and an officer were injured.

Both were treated in hospital and released, and the suspect taken into custody. The man was to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Kingston on Wednesday.

The OPP, meanwhile, notified the SIU, which investigates incidents where civilians are hurt during their dealings with police.
