The ringleader in an Ottawa teen prostitution ring has been sentenced as an adult to six-and-a-half years in prison.

The teen, who was 15 when she was arrested, was convicted of more than two dozen charges, including human trafficking, producing child pornography and abduction of a child under 14 years of age.

She was one of three girls arrested in the notorious case, but the only one who pleaded not guilty. The trio were arrested in June 2012 on a total of 74 charges for luring young victims through social media to a south-end home where they were forced to perform paid sexual acts for male clients.

In January, the youngest of the three girls, who was 15 when she was arrested, was sentenced to the maximum youth sentence of three years. She had five months remaining to serve and was to spend 76 days of supervised custody in the community.

Sentencing for the third defendant was delayed in January when the judge found the recommended sentence of one year to be too lenient. She was 16 at the time of the offences and she was sent for a psychiatric evaluation.

In pre-sentencing hearings, the court heard the teen pimp had a long history of violence, from bullying a grade-school classmate until they were suicidal, to sexually assaulting a five-year-old boy when she was eight, to forcing teenage girls into prostitution at age 15.

Dr. Gregory Motayne, the psychiatrist who assessed the teen pimp, now 18, portrayed her Thursday as a narcissistic sociopath who has an inflated image of herself.

In fact, court heard that the teen pimp somehow blamed her victims, saying it was their idea to be recruited and dispatched as sexual playthings for desperate men over two months in 2012.

Her youngest victim was 13. She was at last week’s sentencing hearing and her mother, outside of court, said the abuse has turned her family’s life upside-down.

Some of the victims have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and all say their lives have been shattered.

The pimp’s life story, heard for the first time in court, was presented as a miserable tale.

She started drinking at 12 and smoking marijuana at 14.

She told the court-appointed psychiatrist that the human trafficking, child pornography and luring charges were all some “misunderstanding that would be resolved.”

While in youth jail, the teen pimp has made a “calculated choice” of “gravitating towards” other inmates with a history in the sex trade, court heard.

The psychiatrist said she had limited insight into what she had done.

Now, as she awaits her sentence, she wants to finish high school, then go to college, court heard. She wants a future in what she called a “helping profession” such as an occupational therapist — a choice the doctor described as unusual.

The psychiatrist testified the teen pimp will be at a high risk to re-offend in the future. It could take 16 years for her to rehabilitate, the psychiatrist said.
