If you’re out and about in this holiday season and have come to rely on the services of the Operation Red Nose collective to get you and your vehicle home from that late-night soirée, you might experience delays this year.
And it may help if you speak French.
T’he volunteer-run program, which has been in operation in Ottawa for the past few years, has been unable to drum up a corporate sponsor and has also experienced insurance problems and won’t be offering the services.
Instead, calls are being routed to Opération Nez Rouge Outaouais, which has been running for more than 30 years. The operation’s insurer and sponsor Desjardins has apparently extended their coverage to enable Quebec-side volunteers to operate in Ontario.
The Ottawa phone number 613-820-NOSE is forwarded directly to the Gatineau office, and the call centre says it’s bilingual.
As of Saturday, the Ottawa website rednoseottawa.com just says “Stay tuned for more information.”
While rides with Red Nose/Nez Rouge are free, donations are encouraged. In the case of Nez Rouge, all donations go towards the Loisir Sport Outaouais organization.
Last year, the Outaouais organization took more than 2,000 calls over their holiday service.
The service is offered from 8 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. every Friday and Saturday in December, as well as Thursdays, Dec. 11 and Dec. 18. Also Nez Rouge will be on the job Dec. 30 and New Year’s Eve.
Help is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.
