Paramedics are urging caution after an 84-year-old Metcalfe man died Thursday morning while he was shovelling his driveway.
Paramedics were called to the man’s home at around 8:30 a.m. after a neighbour saw him collapse on his driveway.
When paramedics arrived, the man had no vitals signs. Despite exhaustive resuscitative measures, the man was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The man’s death comes a day after a man in his 70s was taken to hospital in critical condition after he collapsed while shovelling snow.
The neighbours were performing CPR on the man before paramedics took over and began “advanced resuscitative measures” and restarted the man’s heart.
The man was unconscious and not breathing on his own when he arrived at the hospital in critical condition.
J.P. Trottier, the Ottawa Paramedic Service spokesman, said people over the age of 40 should be cleared by their family doctor before they shovel their driveway.
“People need to recognize that it places a heavy demand on their heart and lungs,” Trottier said. “If you have a heart condition that you know about, or one you don’t know about it, it can be deadly.”
Trottier said if you have chest discomfort or shortness of breath, stop shovelling and call 911. Some people who experience chest pain from shovelling go inside and try to relax, but paramedics say the sooner they can treat you the better.
“They wait and it doesn’t get better,” Trottier said. “Either they collapse in cardiac arrest or a serious heart attack.”
