It is a beautiful historic landmark. However, the location is uninspiring. Quebec's environment is more extraordinary than Montebello. . Too bad it wasn't located up Hwy 323, Lac des Plages the frontier of the Laurentians.
I am happy private enterprise has purchased it. It's overpriced.The rich can enjoy it. Play golf and revel in their wealth. perceived or otherwise.
The government could have blocked the sale because it's a Canadian landmark. They could have purchased the property and have it managed by Fairmont. The Papineau property is right next to it and government owned.
I feel like crying. We actually witnessed the celebration of the purchase on Wed night in the dining room by the Chinese group and Fairmont management. There was a lot of clinking of wine glasses and toasts being made. I can't believe they sold out this beautiful piece of history. I am absolutely disgusted! This is the beginning of the end.
Sad indeed! One less location to vacation with my family.
Wow, a lot of pushback here against the Chinese, one of our biggest trading partners. Canadian racism is rearing its ugly head. In case people don't know, US/Canadian companies have invested heavily in China over the last several years, as an example GM, Ford and Chrysler opening many manufacturing and assembly plants there - this is not a one way street by any means. As for the hotel, obviously the Ontario Municipal Employee's fund did not think owning the Chateau was a worthwhile...

@Kirk444

The Chinese trade with Canada ...when they feel like it.
Ahh, yes, Chinee people now have nice log house in Canada for meeting place with the running dogs of the Wall Street imperialists!
So the Chinese are going to buy up Canada now???
@greensleeves ....Have you been in hibernation for a few years????
Does this mean they install spy ware to all suites, or will it be just the standard rooms?
hopefully the queen can come and save us all!
Used to go there every year - will never go back again. Unfortunately that will also have a negative impact on the locals in the area.
