Ian Bush, accused of attacking a 101-year-old veteran of the Second World War this month, has been sent to the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre for a 30-day assessment.

Bush appeared in an Ottawa courtroom just before noon Wednesday.

Before he appeared, he met with a Royal psychiatrist at the courthouse for a few minutes. The doctor didn’t appear in court but sent word that he had no concerns about Bush’s fitness to stand trial.

However, he ordered Bush to have a 30-day evaluation to assess whether he could be found criminally responsible.

Bush, 59, is charged with attempted murder, forcible confinement, and other offences after a man roughed up and robbed D-Day veteran Ernest Côté in his own apartment.

Police say a man pretending to be a City of Ottawa employee talked Côté into letting him in on Dec. 18, and then put a plastic bag over the veteran’s head and robbed him. Côté was able to free himself and call 911.

He wasn’t seriously injured. He told a Citizen reporter after the attack: “I’m fine and in good shape,” and wished everyone a merry Christmas.

A security camera near the building’s door provided images that were widely circulated after the attack, which drew condemnation from Prime Minister Stephen Harper among others.

Bush has had a long career in human resources consulting, and has never been in trouble with the law before. He’ll be back in court Jan. 23.
