Friends and family are rallying to support an Ottawa couple whose only son suffered a devastating brain aneurysm this week and was to be taken off life support on Christmas Eve.
Cameron McKinnon’s parents, Heather and Mark, want his organs to be donated to others.
“He was the love of his parents’ life and now he’s gone,” said Krysia Kurylowicz, executive director of Parkway House, a home for disabled adults where Heather McKinnon has worked for more than 20 years as a caregiver. “It’s just the worst nightmare you can imagine.”
Cameron has been kept on life-support since Monday, when he suffered the aneurysm, because bad weather has made it impossible to transport the organs to waiting recipients, she said.
Kurylowicz and some friends have started an online fundraising campaign to help the McKinnon family financially. Mark McKinnon is also a caregiver for the disabled, but has been unable to work for the past four years because of serious health issues of his own.
“Hold your loved ones close,” the friends wrote on the Cameron McKinnon Memorial Fundraiser page. Heather and Mark “have devoted their lives to care for others, and now they need help to cope with all the costs associated with the unexpected death of one so precious. As you celebrate with your family, remember the broken hearted.”
Residents at Parkway house have been devastated by the news, Kurylowicz said.
“Cameron’s been coming here since he was a baby, so they all know him.”
The fundraiser will help the McKinnon family with funeral costs and to help ease their financial worries.
“It’s just money. Nothing can make up for the loss of their son, but it might make some things easier. The next few months are going to be extremely difficult.”
