The RCMP say they have arrested two men from Ottawa on multiple terrorism-related charges after one of the men allegedly tried to fly overseas.
Carlos Larmond, 24, was arrested Friday at Montreal’s Pierre-Elliott Trudeau airport, the RCMP said in a statement. He has been charged with attempting to leave the country to participate in a terrorist activity abroad, as well as participating in the activity of a terrorist group.
Ashton Carleton Larmond, also 24, was arrested in Ottawa, police said. He’s been charged with facilitating a terrorist activity, participating in the activity of a terrorist group, and instructing to carry out an activity for a terrorist group.
Both men share the same birthdate, November 21 1990.
In the release, RCMP Assistant Commissioner James Malizia says the arrests speak to the national police force’s “ability to tackle a threat that is multifaceted and constantly evolving.
“Through collaborative efforts with our partners, we were able to prevent these individuals from leaving Canada to engage in terrorist activity overseas,” he is quoted as saying.
The Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) made the arrests “following a national security criminal investigation,” the RCMP said. It also thanked the Ottawa Police Service and the Ontario Provincial Police for playing “a significant role” in the case.
The RCMP said it would not be providing any more details about the case “as it is before the courts.” It encouraged the public to report any suspicious activities by calling 1-800-420-5805.
