There were no working smoke alarms in the house where an elderly Barrhaven couple died in a fire Tuesday morning, investigators say.
Ontario Fire Marshal Ted Wieclawek released the information in a Twitter message Thursday night, urging people to check their smoke alarms and to practise a fire escape plan.
Absence of working smoke alarms contributed to #Nepean fire. Have smoke alarms & practised escape plans. http://t.co/fh2fIuAJRQ #ottnews

Charles and Ada Morton died in the midday fire at their home on Goodwood Drive in Heart’s Desire, along the Jock River near Prince of Wales Drive. Charles, 75, and Ada, 74, were raised in Griffin, Sask., but have lived in Ottawa since 1962. They have five children.
The fire broke out at about 10:30 a.m. and flames soon engulfed the bungalow. Firefighters were hampered by extreme cold and water shortages and were forced to pump water from the nearest hydrant, 700 metres away.
One body was found in the kitchen and another in the hallway on the main floor. The Morton used a wood stove to heat the house, but investigators have ruled it out as the source of the fire, said Marc Messier of the Ottawa Fire Service. The fire seems to have started in the basement, he said.
The fire is being investigated by the Ontario fire marshal. It could be several weeks before investigators know what happened, said OFM spokeswoman Carol Gravelle.
“The absence of a working smoke alarm certainly played a role,” Gravelle said.
