Two residents of the Glebe credited a working smoke detector for alerting them to a potentially dangerous situation early Thursday.
First responders were called to 264 Fourth Ave. at about 3:45 a.m.
Smoke was pouring from the home, but residents were safely on the sidewalk.
Firefighters managed to contain the blaze just before 4 a.m.
A malfunction in a fan plug was blamed for the fire, which caused an estimated $20,000 in damages.
There were no injuries, but the two residents will be displaced pending repairs.
