Liquidation sales at Ottawa’s Target stores will likely begin in two to three weeks as the company winds down its failed foray into Canada.
“Target Canada is in the process of choosing a liquidator,” Eric Hausman, senior public relations manager, told the Citizen in an email on Tuesday. “Liquidation is likely to begin in 2-3 weeks.”
Target has five stores in Ottawa — Place d’Orléans, St. Laurent Boulevard, Billings Bridge, Merivale Road and Hazeldean Mall — and a sixth store was to have been a key tenant at the revamped Bayshore Shopping Centre.
The shutdown of Target’s Canadian stores, announced last week, will cost about 1,000 jobs in the Ottawa area.
Target opened its first store in Canada in March 2013 and lost more than $1 billion in its first year of operations. The Minneapolis company has 133 stores in Canada.
